Why Jackalope Photography?

If you're unfamiliar with the Jackalope, it's a fascinating creature often described as a rabbit with antlers, resembling a unicorn in its mythical nature. This quirky being is somewhat of a Midwest legend, and I have a personal fondness for unique and unusual things—much like myself!

While visiting a store in Baltimore called Bazaar, I came across a striking piece of fake taxidermy: a Jackalope. I decided to buy it for my desk at work. As I gazed at this whimsical decoration, inspiration struck me for my photography business. It was in that moment of creativity, looking at the Jackalope, that the name "Jackalope Photography" was born.

This name reflects not only my love for the unconventional but also the distinctive perspective I bring to my work.

My Proposal Story

This photo captures one of the happiest moments of my life: when my fiancé, Kristian, proposed to me in Aruba. It was an absolute surprise! During our vacation, I had arranged a photo shoot for us because, after all, we were in Aruba and wanted to capture the memories.

Little did I know, Kristian had secretly coordinated with our photographer to plan the proposal. Throughout the shoot, the photographer kept saying, "This is the perfect shot!" which left me feeling quite confused. That was actually Kristian's cue to get down on one knee! The moment was made even more special when I saw that Kristian was emotional, and I have an incredible video of the entire proposal on my personal Instagram—thanks to our photographer. It truly was the best day ever!

Every year we try to take a couples trip to one of our favorite tropical locations. Rincon, Puerto RIco or Aruba are our top two favorites. Aruba is currently winning though as that is where Kristian proposed.

More randomness about me...

I have been running my photography business since 2016, and I absolutely love what I do! In 2022, I took the leap to pursue photography full-time, and I haven’t looked back since.

Beyond my photography work, my life is deeply intertwined with the world of collectibles and pop culture. My partner and I manage two shows: the Maryland Toy Expo and the Annapolis Toy Show, and we frequently attend various other events, both selling and buying items for resale. Our collection includes a treasure trove of vintage memorabilia, such as Star Wars figures, Gremlins, and an impressive assortment of Furbys—I have about 30 of them (though I haven’t counted in a while)! We even have a mini Lego store set up in our basement. It’s quite the passion project, and I genuinely love being part of this incredible community. I also create and sell earrings at some of the conventions we attend, adding another layer to my creative outlets.

As someone who often feels awkward in front of the camera, I thrive in working with others who share that sentiment. It’s all about making everyone feel comfortable and at ease during our sessions and I make sure that we laugh the entire time - mostly about how weird we all feel ;)

In 2024, I achieved a significant milestone by opening my very first studio! This has been a dream of mine since I started in 2016, and I never thought it would actually become a reality. I’m incredibly proud of this space and excited to share it with clients and fellow photographers who need a place to create.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for your interest! I hope we can connect, whether it’s through me photographing your wedding, family, or baby, or perhaps meeting at a toy show someday. I look forward to chatting with you, wherever that may be!
