There are plenty of waterfront wedding venues in Annapolis, but very few let you sail away from the dock and get married in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.
That's exactly what made this October wedding at the Annapolis Maritime Museum so memorable.
On October 24th, a small group of family boarded the historic Wilma Lee and headed out onto the water while the rest of the wedding guests remained ashore, waiting for the celebration later that evening. The plan was simple: sail out into the Bay, exchange vows, enjoy the experience, and then return to the museum for a reception with friends and family.
No over-the-top production. No complicated logistics. Just a couple who wanted an intimate ceremony on one of the most iconic boats in Annapolis.
And despite temperatures that felt much colder than anyone expected, it ended up being one of the coolest weddings I've photographed.
A Chesapeake Bay Wedding Unlike Any Other
The Wilma Lee isn't just a backdrop. It's an experience.
Built in 1940, the historic skipjack is one of the most recognizable vessels in Annapolis, and for couples looking for something different than a traditional ballroom wedding, it creates an unforgettable setting.
We boarded around 3:00 PM and sailed toward the Bay Bridge before stopping for the ceremony around 3:30 PM. The atmosphere felt incredibly personal. With only a handful of family members on board, the ceremony felt less like an event and more like a meaningful moment shared among the people closest to the couple.
One of my favorite parts of the day was how intentional everything felt. There wasn't room for distractions. There wasn't room for a complicated production schedule. The focus stayed exactly where it belonged.

The Reality of Wedding Photography on a Boat
One thing couples should know if they're considering a ceremony aboard the Wilma Lee: space is limited.
And honestly, that's part of what makes it so special.
Instead of spending an hour creating endless portrait combinations, the day naturally leaned toward a more documentary style of photography. The movement of the boat, the changing scenery, and the limited space encouraged everyone to simply enjoy the experience.
We captured a handful of portraits while sailing, but most of the photography focused on candid moments—the laughter, the conversations, the excitement of being out on the water, and all of the little interactions that make a wedding day feel real.
As an Annapolis wedding photographer, those are often my favorite images anyway. The ones that couldn't have happened anywhere else. Cold Weather, Perfect Light While the temperature was definitely cold, the light was absolutely perfect.
October is one of my favorite times of year for an Annapolis waterfront wedding because the sunlight tends to be softer throughout the day. Even with the cold wind coming off the Bay, the conditions for photography were incredible.
There wasn't a single point during the day where I found myself fighting harsh light or difficult shadows. The over-water reflections created beautiful, even light that worked well for both candid moments and portraits.
If you're planning a Chesapeake Bay wedding, lighting doesn't get much better than a clear fall afternoon on the water.
The only thing I'd recommend is preparing for the weather.
Even when temperatures seem reasonable on land, it can feel dramatically colder once you're out on the Bay. For late fall weddings, blankets, warm drinks, and heat lamps can make a huge difference for guest comfort.
Returning to Shore for the Celebration
After the ceremony, the group continued sailing before returning to the Annapolis Maritime Museum around 5:00 PM.
This is where the wedding shifted gears.
The intimate ceremony on the water gave way to a larger celebration as additional friends and family joined for cocktail hour and the reception. Family portraits took place both before and after the ceremony, allowing us to include everyone without disrupting the flow of the day.
The reception space looked incredible. Florals from Carried Away Florals added texture and color throughout the museum, while the waterfront setting provided a perfect backdrop for the evening. The overall atmosphere felt less like a traditional wedding reception and more like an elevated dinner party.
Relaxed. Intentional. Comfortable. Exactly the way the couple wanted it.
Cotton Candy Skies Over Annapolis
One of the most beautiful moments of the day happened just before sunset.
While the sun doesn't actually set over the water at this location, the sky exploded with soft pinks, blues, and purples as evening approached. The entire waterfront took on that cotton-candy glow photographers dream about.
It's one of the reasons I always encourage couples planning an Annapolis waterfront wedding to carve out a few minutes around sunset, even if they don't want a lengthy portrait session. The light is worth it.
Whether you're on the docks, near the museum, or simply stepping outside for a few minutes during cocktail hour, that evening glow can create some of the most memorable photographs of the entire day.
Night Portraits in Downtown Annapolis
Before wrapping up coverage for the evening, we made one final stop in downtown Annapolis. The couple planned an after-party at Harry's, and before guests fully settled in, we slipped outside for a few nighttime portraits along the surrounding streets.
These images ended up feeling completely different from everything we had created earlier in the day. The historic charm of downtown Annapolis, the glow of the city lights, and the energy of the evening provided a perfect contrast to the quiet ceremony on the water.
From sailing aboard a historic skipjack to wandering downtown streets after dark, the variety of locations made this wedding uniquely Annapolis from beginning to end.
