Planning your wedding can feel like being dropped into a Pinterest ocean—endless inspiration, endless opinions, and endless checklists telling you what to ask your photographer.

But after photographing more than 300 weddings, I can tell you this: most of those lists are outdated, overly technical, or focused on the wrong things.

So instead, I’m offering a set of questions that are realistic, modern, and actually useful—the kind that reveal how a photographer works, communicates, and shows up when it matters most.

This post includes:

  • 20 thoughtful interview questions to ask your potential photographer
  • My personal answers, for full transparency
  • Questions to ask yourself after the call
  • Red flags worth paying attention to

Let’s get into it.

1. What’s your approach to capturing and posing a wedding day?

This question reveals how a photographer balances direction with authenticity.

My answer: My approach is candid at its core. While posed photos are part of every well-rounded timeline, I focus on prompting interaction rather than stiff posing. I also create a detailed timeline with you ahead of time and follow it closely so the day flows smoothly.

2. What’s the worst thing that’s happened on a wedding day—and how did you handle it?

You’re not looking for perfection. You’re looking for composure.

My answer: I once dropped my camera and broke both a flash and a lens. I took a quiet breath, grabbed my backups, and kept going without missing a beat. That experience is exactly why I always come prepared.

3. What happens if you can’t make it to my wedding?

Every professional should have a contingency plan.

My answer: I’ve never missed a wedding—but I have trusted professional backups in place in the rare case of an emergency.

4. How do you back up your images?

This one is non-negotiable.

My answer: I shoot on dual card slots, back everything up to two external hard drives, and upload galleries to Dropbox. Your photos exist in multiple places at all times.

5. Do you help create the photography timeline?

Most couples shouldn’t be expected to do this alone.

My answer: Absolutely. I send a detailed questionnaire, build your custom timeline, and follow it checklist-style on the wedding day.

6. Do you carry backup equipment?

Equipment fails. Professionals plan for it.

My answer: I bring three camera bodies, multiple lenses, two flashes, and more batteries than I’ll ever need.

7. How and when will we receive our photos?

Turnaround and delivery matter.

My answer: Sneak peeks arrive within two weeks. Full galleries are delivered within 60–90 days, depending on the season, via an online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints.

8. What kind of editing is included?

Editing styles vary widely—and it’s important to know what you’re getting.

My answer: Every image receives consistent color correction. I’ll remove temporary blemishes or small distractions, but more extensive edits—like body reshaping or major object removal—are discussed separately.

9. What’s your cancellation policy?

It’s better to know now than later.

My answer: Retainers are non-refundable. If you need to cancel, we sign a release and part ways respectfully. Rescheduling is flexible when possible.

10. Can we see a full wedding gallery?

This shows consistency from start to finish.

My answer: Yes. Full galleries are available at the bottom of my wedding info page. Transparency is important to me.

11. Will you personally photograph our wedding?

Not all brands operate the same way.

My answer: Jackalope Photography is just me. Unless there’s an emergency, I’ll be the one documenting your day.

12. Do you have insurance?

Some venues require it—and it protects everyone.

My answer: Yes, I’m fully insured.

13. Will we still get posed portraits?

Candid doesn’t mean unstructured.

My answer: Always. Family formals, couple portraits, and wedding party photos are built into the plan—and I guide you through them so nothing feels awkward or rushed.

14. Can we share a Pinterest board?

This tells you how collaborative your photographer is.

My answer: Please do. I use it to understand your aesthetic and keep it handy on the wedding day. While I won’t recreate images exactly, it’s a great reference point.

15. Do you shoot on dual card slot cameras?

A technical question—but an important one.

My answer: Yes. Every image is saved twice, instantly.

16. Do we receive the copyright?

This is an industry-standard topic.

My answer: I retain the copyright, but you receive full personal usage rights. Print, share, post—just don’t resell.

17. Can we have the RAW files?

A common question with a simple answer.

My answer: No. RAW files are unfinished and don’t represent my final work. Most professional photographers don’t deliver them.

18. What’s your communication style like?

This affects your entire experience.

My answer: Clear, prompt, and consistent. If a vendor is hard to reach before booking, it’s unlikely to improve later.

19. How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience shows up in the moments you don’t see.

My answer: Over 300 weddings and events. I know how to manage timelines, navigate chaos, and anticipate what matters most.

20. Can we request specific shots?

It’s your day—your priorities matter.

My answer: Yes. I incorporate your requests into the timeline and make sure nothing important gets missed.

Questions to Ask Yourself After the Call
