A little-known fact about me is that I was a complete horse enthusiast growing up. My childhood bedroom walls were painted with horses, my shelves lined with Breyer models, and my book collection stacked high with every horse story I could find. Beyond that, I was fortunate enough to have horses of my own on my family’s farm, where I fell in love with caring for them—the smell of the barn (yes, even that), the grooming, and of course, the joy of riding.
So when my friend, Carrie, invited me to an event featuring barrel racing—and mentioned that photographers were welcome—I couldn’t have been more excited. It was certainly a better way to spend a Monday evening than sitting on the couch watching trash TV.
The Art of Barrel Racing, hosted at the Circle R Arena in Reisterstown, MD with Poe Country Photography, featured about 20 riders of all ages competing for a cash prize. The event was not only a thrill to photograph but also a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow photographers across different specialties, from music and weddings to equine work.
Although I had always known about barrel racing from my horse-nerd days, I had never seen it live until that night. Experiencing the energy and skill firsthand was incredible, and if the arena were closer to me, I’d be at every single event with my camera in hand.
