If you’re planning a United States Naval Academy wedding, you already know there’s nothing quite like saying “I do” on the Yard. The history, the traditions, the architecture — it all creates an unforgettable setting. As a USNA wedding photographer, I’ve had the honor of documenting love stories in this iconic space, and Katie & Max’s July 19th, 2025 celebration was one for the books.
Their day included a stunning Naval Academy Chapel wedding, portraits across the Yard, and a high-energy reception at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Annapolis, Maryland. It was joyful, meaningful, and full of moments that perfectly captured what makes an Annapolis military wedding so special.
Let’s dive into their story — along with planning tips for couples dreaming of their own United States Naval Academy wedding.
A July Wedding at the United States Naval Academy | Annapolis, MD
Katie & Max were married on a beautiful (and yes, hot!) July afternoon in Annapolis. Their ceremony began at 2:00 p.m. inside the United States Naval Academy Chapel, followed by portraits on the Yard. The reception kicked off at 6:00 p.m. at the nearby Crowne Plaza Hotel.
From start to finish, it was seamless — but what made this wedding especially meaningful for me was a full-circle moment. After they booked me as their USNA wedding photographer, I photographed Plebe Summer at the high ropes course — and Katie happened to be working that section. Seeing her in her element made documenting her wedding day even more special.
Katie and Max are genuinely some of the kindest, warmest people you could meet. Their families were overjoyed, their friends showed up ready to celebrate, and the entire reception felt like one big, heartfelt party.
The Naval Academy Chapel Wedding Experience
One of the most common questions couples ask: Is the chapel dark?
The United States Naval Academy Chapel is actually beautifully lit. The natural light filtering through the windows, combined with the chapel’s interior glow, creates a classic, timeless look in photos. For Katie & Max’s 2:00 p.m. ceremony, the lighting was clean and balanced — ideal for capturing both the grandeur of the space and the intimate emotion of the vows.
The ceremony concluded around 2:45 p.m., followed by a joyful sword arch exit on the chapel steps. There was so much laughter as Katie and Max walked beneath the swords — and those moments coming down the steps? Absolute magic. If you’re planning a Naval Academy Chapel wedding, don’t rush this part. The energy and tradition make for some of the most iconic images of the day.
Portraits on the Yard: Timing & Lighting Tips
All portraits — family, wedding party, and couple — were completed after the ceremony. Family photos took approximately 20 minutes, which is right on track when there’s a clear list and everyone is ready to go.
Best Portrait Locations at USNA
If you’re planning a United States Naval Academy wedding, here’s what you need to know about portrait lighting:
Farragut House is perfection.
The lighting there is consistently beautiful all day long. It offers shade, architectural interest, and clean backdrops that photograph beautifully.
There is always shade on the Yard.
Even for summer weddings, we can find soft light. That’s a huge advantage of getting married at USNA.
Ideally, for summer weddings, I recommend scheduling couple portraits later in the afternoon rather than right at mid-day. July sun in Annapolis is strong — and while we absolutely work with what we have (and did beautifully for Katie & Max), later light adds softness and dimension.
That said, USNA is forgiving. Between the tree-lined paths and historic buildings, we can create stunning portraits even at 3:00 p.m. in July.
Timeline Considerations for a
USNA Wedding
Katie & Max’s timeline worked well:
- 2:00 p.m. – Ceremony
- 2:45 p.m. – Ceremony ends
- Immediately following – Family + wedding party + couple portraits
- 6:00 p.m. – Reception at Crowne Plaza
There was a comfortable buffer between ceremony and reception, which allowed for portraits and a little breathing room before heading to the hotel.
Important Planning Tip: Account
for Travel Time
Even though the Crowne Plaza is a short distance from the
Yard, don’t underestimate:
- Walking time on base
- Getting to your vehicle
- Traffic in downtown Annapolis
- Traffic on the bay bridge if you traveling there - especially important for summer weddings to consider!
- Guest transportation timing
Build in buffer time. The last thing you want is to feel rushed leaving your portraits or stressed about making your reception entrance.
Summer Annapolis Military
Wedding Planning Tips
If you’re planning a summer Annapolis military wedding, here’s my honest advice:
1. Bring Water. Bring Fans. Every. Single. Wedding.
July at USNA is beautiful — and hot. Hydration matters. Small handheld fans? Game changer. Your bridal party will thank you, and you’ll feel better in your dress or uniform.
2. Embrace the Traditions
The sword arch, the chapel setting, the historic backdrops — lean into it. These elements are what make a United States Naval Academy wedding unique.
Katie & Max’s sword arch exit was full of joy. The energy was contagious, and it set the tone for the rest of the celebration.
3. Keep Family Photos Efficient
Twenty minutes was all we needed because:
- We had a clear shot list.
- Family members knew where to go.
- Everyone was ready immediately after the ceremony.
- Efficiency keeps the day relaxed and gives you more time for portraits and celebration.
Reception at the Crowne Plaza Hotel
After portraits, Katie & Max made their way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Annapolis for their reception. The travel was short, which kept the flow of the day smooth.
The reception? An absolute party.
Their closest family and friends packed the dance floor. There was nonstop laughter, heartfelt toasts, and the kind of celebration that reminds you why weddings matter in the first place. Their families were overjoyed from start to finish — the pride, the happiness, the relief after the ceremony — it was all there.
This is what I love about photographing an Annapolis military wedding: tradition, commitment, community, and celebration all woven together.
Choosing a USNA Wedding Photographer
A United States Naval Academy wedding comes with specific logistics, lighting considerations, and traditions. You want a USNA wedding photographer who understands:
- Chapel lighting and ceremony restrictions
- Portrait flow on the Yard
- Base access and timing logistics
- The importance of military traditions like the sword arch
Katie & Max’s wedding was the perfect blend of timeless and joyful. Beautiful weather (hot but manageable), stunning chapel lighting, perfect portrait locations, and a reception full of life.
