Tying the knot at the United States Naval Academy is an honor steeped in tradition, prestige, and breathtaking scenery. Whether you're an Academy graduate or marrying one, planning a wedding here comes with unique considerations. To help you make the most of this beautiful and meaningful venue, here are some expert tips to ensure a seamless celebration.

1. Start Early with Permissions and Paperwork

The USNA Chapel is a high-demand venue, and there are specific eligibility requirements to marry there. Start by confirming:

  • Eligibility: At least one party must be a USNA graduate, active-duty military, or faculty/staff.
  • Booking: Chapel reservations are taken exactly year or less in advance. Call the Chapel Office as early as possible to secure your date. You will not be able to book a date before 1 year.
  • Paperwork: You’ll need to provide proof of eligibility, complete pre-marital counseling, and submit your marriage license in accordance with Maryland law.

Pro tip: Keep a digital and printed folder with all confirmations and paperwork—you’ll thank yourself later!

2. Understand the Naval Academy’s Rules and Timeline

Because USNA is an active military base, all weddings must follow strict guidelines:

  • Ceremony Timing: Weddings are typically scheduled on Saturdays, with limited time blocks (usually 1.5–2 hours total, including set-up and teardown). You must arrive 30 minutes prior to your ceremony and everyone must be on time for the ceremony.
  • Access and Security: Your vendors and guests will need Real IDs to enter the Yard. Ensure all vendor names are submitted to security beforehand.
  • Photography Rules: Photography is allowed, but some areas are off-limits and you need prior approval to shoot in every building. A professional photographer who is an approved vendor with USNA will know how to work within these rules and make the most of the iconic backdrops like Bancroft Hall, the Chapel, Dahlgren Hall and more. If you do not hire an approved photography vendor for your wedding, they will not be allowed to photograph anything on base or in the chapel. Jackalope Photography has been an approved vendor for 6 years and knows the process like the back of her hand.

3. Coordinate with Military Traditions

USNA weddings are rich in time-honored traditions. If you’re including military customs, plan and practice them in advance:

  • Sword Arch: A traditional sword arch adds dramatic flair and symbolism. Confirm which officers will participate, and ensure they rehearse the sequence.
  • Uniform Guidelines: Military dress uniforms must be worn properly. Officers and enlisted personnel have different formalwear protocols—check the regulations to avoid missteps.

These traditions elevate your ceremony, making it even more meaningful.

4. Prep for the Logistics of the Day

There are a few things that make USNA weddings logistically unique:

  • Limited Parking: Recommend carpooling with people who can drive on base or shuttles for guests. Parking on the Yard is limited, especially during major events like graduation in the month of May.
  • Weather Considerations: Maryland weather can be unpredictable. Have an inclement weather plan—especially if you’re planning photos around base or a sword arch outdoors. Fortunately, the grounds have incredible inside options for photos so we can make a game plan for this if the weather isn't great on your wedding day.
  • Guest Comfort: The walk from the gates to the Chapel can be long. Provide directions to your guests and make sure they are prepared for whatever the weather may be for their walk to the Chapel.

A wedding planner familiar with the Naval Academy will be a huge asset here.

5. Choose a Photographer Who Knows the Yard

The USNA grounds offer iconic photo ops—from the Chapel doors to the steps of Bancroft Hall—but timing and access can be limited. Hire a photographer experienced with:

  • Navigating USNA’s security requirements
  • Capturing traditional and candid moments with military precision
  • Using light creatively in both Chapel and outdoor settings

This ensures you’ll have stunning photos without delays or disruptions.

6. Celebrate Your Story with Intention

Last but not least, remember to infuse your personalities and values into the day:

  • Add personalized vows or a moment of silence to reflect the gravity of your union.
  • Display family military history or heritage touches at the reception.
  • Incorporate nautical or patriotic elements into your color palette or décor.

Marrying at the Naval Academy is about more than just location—it’s about legacy, honor, and love.

A wedding at the United States Naval Academy is not just beautiful—it’s deeply symbolic. With thoughtful planning, respect for tradition, and a strong team of experienced vendors, your day will be both seamless and unforgettable.
